Would you like to add an impressive color to your bedroom or living room but are not sure if you should commit?
Try to create an accent wall instead of painting all the walls. That will add a focal point in the room without being visually overwhelming.
Choose a Color
In general, an accent wall is supposed to be the focal point of a room; the choice of color must be well thought out.
Many interior designers tend to choose colors that are present in the room as an accent color.
In this way, there will be a certain depth in the room, and the decoration will be cohesive.
If you choose a particularly bright color as the accent color, be sure to add other touches of that color to the decor.
This can be through carpets, paintings, or various accessories.
To make the accent wall even more interesting, some designers recommend choosing a glossy finish.
For autumn, a bright orange tone will be ideal.
For the winter, warm the room with chocolate brown or cinnabar red.
Prepare the Surface
Once you have chosen your accent color, prepare the surface to be painted. Make sure it is perfectly clean.
That amounts to getting rid of spider webs on the corners of the wall and dusting off the entire surface.
After that, it is best to lightly sand the wall and then dust it again.
Start Painting
Although it is a single wall, instead of four, painting it still requires patience and care. This wall alone will be the most remarkable and outstanding of all, so it must be perfect.
The number of layers of paint to apply depends on the color saturation you expect.
In general, for a light color, think of one or two layers.
On the other hand, if you would like to have a richer or darker shade, consider applying two to three coats of paint.
The best technique for applying the paint is to do it slowly by applying one coat at a time, waiting for it to dry before adding the next layer.
Paint the Other Three Walls before Creating Your Accent Wall
To create an accent wall, you are not limited to painting. You can very well create one using wallpaper.
Nevertheless, there is a good chance that you will have to paint the other three walls.
If the color of these has nothing to do with your favorite wallpaper, they will have to be repainted.
If your wallpaper has a gray background with yellow geometric patterns on it, think of painting the other three walls with a light shade of gray, to begin with.
The goal is to make the decoration harmonious.
Other than that, you should make sure, in one way or another, that the wallpaper is the focal point, and no other dominant color or element is stealing the show.
The Bottom Line
Accent walls are a fun and creative way of adding a little drama and excitement into your interior space.
An accent wall serves to break the often monotonous appearance of a room with the same color on all the walls.
It allows you to highlight a decorative/architectural element or a piece of unique art/furniture in your home.

Kevin began painting houses with his father’s company, C&K Painting, in 1996. His father taught him how to use a brush, roller, and caulk and clean a brush properly. He then worked for several other paint companies, where he learned how to spray oils, lacquers, and all water-based finishes. In 2012, after 15 years of experience, he decided to get licensed and start the Maller Painting Company.
